Giving Men a Safe Space to Heal and Speak Out

Men Up Ndoda

“Through the SEF programme, Men Up Ndoda is able to reach more men in our communities who are suffering in silence,” says Eric Motlatsi from Men Up Ndoda.

Men Up Ndoda is a community-based organisation in Mangaung, Free State, and one of NACOSA’s implementing partners for the Social Employment Fund Programme.

The organisation was established in 2022 by co-founders Eric Motlatsi and McDonald Tsolo, who had experienced abusive relationships themselves. After receiving healing and support, they were inspired to create a safe space where men could openly talk about abuse, receive counselling, and find support without fear of judgement.

In South Africa, gender-based violence affects thousands of people, and men who experience abuse often remain silent. Many fear discrimination, labelling, and social stigma. Cultural expectations that men must always appear strong often prevent them from seeking help, leaving many survivors isolated and unsupported.

Men Up Ndoda is creating awareness about gender-based violence against men and encouraging open conversations about mental health, healing, and support. The organisation provides counselling, advocacy, and community awareness programmes aimed at helping men regain confidence and rebuild their lives.

The Social Employment Fund, managed by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), works with Strategic Implementing Partners across South Africa, including NACOSA. These partners provide services in areas such as community health and caregiving, gender-based violence, digital inclusion, food security and nutrition, education, early childhood development, greening and the environment, placemaking, and arts and culture. The Strategic Implementing Partners also work with community organisations like  Men Up Ndoda to create real impact and measurable economic change within communities.

Its partnership with the SEF Programme is also helping young people access financial education and skills development opportunities. These programmes aim to empower youth economically, restore dignity, and strengthen their ability to support themselves.

Community-led organisations like Men Up Ndoda play a vital role in creating safe spaces for survivors of gender-based violence and driving change at grassroots level. Through partnerships and funding support from programmes like the Social Employment Fund, organisations are able to expand access to counselling, support services, and opportunities that help survivors rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
