The role of the counsellor is to aid and support the client in coming to terms with the outcome of the HIV test.

Post- test counselling creates an environment in which the client is taught how to cope with strong emotional reactions after receiving their HIV test result and the changes their status will bring to their life. It also prepares the client to disclose their status to their partner and/or family and to build up a support network.
