Women Face More Than Just the Virus
HIV is a significant threat to South Africa’s public health, particularly among women. UNAIDS show a worrying image: over 4.9 million women aged 15 and older are living with HIV.
Following the landmark announcement in the Minister of Health’s budget speech that pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Test and Treat will be provided to sex workers from 1 June, the National Department of Health has assessed and approved the following sites for the initial rollout:
Additional sites will be prepared to provide these services in the coming months.
“We are immensely proud to be part of this first phase of the rollout,” says NACOSA’s Global Fund Programme Director, Marieta de Vos. “We are supplying the drugs through our Global Fund grant and four of our Red Umbrella sub-recipient organisations’ sites – who already provide such excellent combination prevention and care services to sex workers – are part of the sites announced.”
This is a landmark event for the AIDS response in South Africa, – says de Vos.
