NACOSA Launches Ribbon Run on World AIDS Day

Share

NACOSA (Networking HIV and AIDS Community of Southern Africa) is proud to announce the launch of the Ribbon Run, a running event that will take place on World AIDS Day next year in Cape Town. The Ribbon Run invites South Africans of all ages and fitness levels to join the movement to raise awareness and funds for the movement to end AIDS.

The event will include five kilometres, 10 km, and 21 km distances, catering for everyone from casual walkers to elite athletes. The Ribbon Run will be registered with Athletics South Africa and promises to deliver a vibrant day of community spirit, activism, and fitness – all aimed at reducing stigma and raising visibility for AIDS awareness. “Stigma continues to violate the rights of people living with HIV,” says Clive Maluleke, NACOSA’s Business Development Manager. “The Ribbon Run is an opportunity to stand together as a community, promoting unity, compassion, and the understanding needed to turn equality into a reality – not just a promise.”

The red ribbon is the world’s first awareness ribbon in 1991 by a group of artists and activists at the same time as the NACOSA movement to create the first National AIDS Plan was born in South Africa. It has since become a global symbol of solidarity and support for those affected by HIV and AIDS. Today, awareness ribbons have become symbols for numerous causes, including breast cancer awareness.

A Run for Everyone

The Ribbon Run welcomes participants from all walks of life:

  • Serious runners seeking one final challenge before the holiday season.
  • Fun runners and families looking to support a great cause.
  • Activist runners advocating for equal rights and care for people living with HIV.

Every participant contributes to the mission to end AIDS while experiencing the unique South African “gees” (spirit) that makes events like this truly special. #RibbonRun #RunToEndAIDS #RedRibbon #WorldAIDSDay

By sponsoring the Ribbon Run, businesses and organisations can play a vital role in the collective effort to end AIDS. “Sponsorship is more than just support, it is a commitment to breaking down HIV stigma, promoting equality, and championing health for all,” says Clive Maluleke. Sponsors will join a powerful movement, demonstrating their dedication to building a future free from AIDS.
