Globally, people who inject drugs (PWID) are disproportionately affected by HIV, being 28 times more likely to live with the virus than the general population. They also face higher rates of hepatitis C (HCV) and tuberculosis (TB).
South Africa has made considerable progress in harm reduction and evidence-based approaches to drug use, however substantial challenges remain. The persistently high rates of hepatitis C among people who inject and use drugs highlight the ongoing need for action. In light of these critical health challenges, the 13th International Conference on Health and Hepatitis in Substance Users (INHSU 2025) will be held in Cape Town. Taking place from 14-17 October 2025 at the Century City Conference Centre.
The INHSU 2025 aims to bring together global experts to strengthen advocacy efforts, encourage government support for harm reduction initiatives in the region, and foster discussions on effective strategies to address these pressing issues.
