SANAC Statement on NGO Funding

The South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) and the Networking HIV/AIDS Community of South Africa (NACOSA) have been working to address the impact of funding restrictions for organisations working with sex workers and gender-based violence.  We will be working to explore all avenues to raise additional funds and to manage changes more gradually. After discussions with the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, a transition plan has been put in place to give us time to find alternative sources of funding for the NGOs that will lose their funding. National sex worker HIV plan launched

NACOSA Key Populations specialist, Maria Stacey and Programme Director, Marieta De Vos were in Pretoria to support the launch of the South African National Sex Worker HIV Plan 2016 – 2019 by Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa. Sex workers have not received the same attention as the general population in the country response to HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). A 2013 rapid population size estimation study commissioned by SANAC reported that there are approximately 153 000 sex workers in South Africa.
