Action for Key Populations: Key populations are those who are most affected by HIV and AIDS within a specific context. In South Africa, we have identified key populations who need to be prioritised if we are going to bring down the rate of new infections and meet the UN’s Fast Track Targets. Strength in community Strong community systems play a vital role in bringing services to people, but also in taking people to the health and social services they need. Through the Global Fund programme, NACOSA has developed its own model of community systems strengthening which it is  now using to inform the work with orphans and vulnerable children and its own future strategic direction. Community systems that function well have the ability to transform the health and wellbeing of South Africans, particularly in the challenging field of TB prevention.

Caring in the community National Government has embarked on a programme of re-engineering primary health care to create a more efficient and cost-effective health system in South Africa. At the forefront of this is a cadre of people who provide home-based care in communities. In many cases, these workers are not consistently and appropriately recognised and the current Home-Based Care Policy isn’t clear about the future of these unsung heroes.

Health: The Most Neglected Right: The patchy distribution of treatment and unequal access to care is not only an issue for those who are infected but also for the rest of the nation, who carry the economic and social burden of disease. Could health be the most neglected of our human rights?
