Nhlanhla Chiliza and Khetha Maphumulo are two young people from Lamontville who were concerned about the rate of teenage pregnancy, school-dropouts, HIV infection, and lack of socio-economic skills, drugs and substance abuse. They started Deprived Youth Service in 2007, which focuses on skills development for youth in eThekwini South. Since then, the organisation has grown and developed and is now part of the DREAMS programme – a global partnership to reduce HIV/AIDS in adolescent girls and young women. Young South Africans face huge challenges this June 16th. Unemployment is at a new high, disproportionately affecting the youth with a rate of over 50%.
