A Community Development Success Story

On the 23rd of August 2024, we concluded our Mentorship 3 and 4 programmes at the University of Johannesburg in a truly inspiring and impactful manner. This event was more than just a gathering, it was a culmination of months of dedicated effort aimed at fostering community development and leadership among young girls in our DREAMS programme.

From the original 164 participants who completed Mentorship 2, we proudly welcomed 120 DREAMS girls to this session. This turnout is a testament to the strong community ties and the effective engagement strategies we have implemented. The day was filled with energy, unity, and a shared commitment to growth, showcasing the profound impact of community development initiatives.

Throughout the event, we applied key principles of community development, ensuring that every activity was designed to empower and uplift the girls. Our connecting skills were on full display as we bridged gaps between different groups, creating an inclusive environment where every participant felt valued. By organising the event with precision and attention to detail, we ensured that all logistical aspects were seamlessly executed, allowing the day’s focus to remain on the girls and their development.

Our ownership skills were pivotal in fostering a sense of responsibility and pride among both the facilitators and the beneficiaries. We encouraged the girls to take charge of their learning experiences, allowing them to lead activities and discussions. This approach not only built their confidence but also reinforced the importance of self-empowerment within the context of community development.

A cornerstone of our approach was the integration of sustainable development principles. By sharing stories of resilience and success, we empowered the DREAMS girls to see themselves as agents of change in their own communities. The “Gift of Hand, Heart, and Mind” was particularly impactful, enabling the girls to identify and leverage the assets within their schools. This exercise not only highlighted the resources available to them but also reinforced the importance of utilising these assets for community growth.

Our leadership approach was deeply rooted in the person-centered model, where the girls were placed at the center of all activities. We listened to their voices, encouraged their participation, and supported their ideas. This method ensured that the girls felt heard and respected, fostering a sense of belonging and ownership that is crucial in community development work.

The success of this event was also due to the positive group dynamics cultivated among the facilitators and the girls. By fostering an environment of collaboration and mutual support, we were able to create a space where everyone could contribute to the collective success. The unity and determination displayed throughout the day were clear indicators of the strong community bonds that have been established.

The Mentorship 3 and 4 event was a powerful example of how community development can transform lives. By applying principles of sustainable development, leadership, and person-centered approaches, we created an environment where the DREAMS girls could thrive, learn, and grow. The event was not just a celebration of their achievements but also a stepping stone towards a brighter future for these young leaders.
