NACOSA’s motto is ‘we’re stronger together’ which has proved to be the case recently with the NACOSA Training Institute sharing its expertise beyond borders in partnership with Frontline AIDS (previously known as the International HIV/AIDS Alliance). Frontline AIDS’s Regional Financial Management Initiative is providing a year-long accompaniment package of assessment, training and long-term mentoring support to Frontline AIDS partners to strengthen their financial management and onward granting capability. Ten years ago Nomvula*, a 20-year old mother of two living with HIV, would have been extremely ill but with a CD4 count of over 400, she would not have been eligible for treatment. It is likely that at least one of Nomvula’s children would have contracted HIV from her because she mix-fed her babies (breast and bottle feeding). Criminalisation of sex work in South Africa results in sex workers not trusting easily and providing false personal information. This results in programme monitoring systems having multiple unique identifiers attributed to one person. Sex work is mobile and dynamic, with sex workers moving across the country. Following a cohort of sex workers therefore becomes very difficult. Micro planning, an outreach strategy for peer educators, has been designed and successfully implemented in India with sex workers.
